About Spinal Cord Society

The Spinal Cord Society (SCS) is a premier multidisciplinary organization committed to advancing the science, clinical care, rehabilitation, and societal integration of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Established in 1999, SCS has evolved into a nationally influential and internationally connected body, serving as a key platform for innovation, education, and collaborative progress in spinal injury management.

Today, SCS represents a robust and expanding professional network, with over 1,800 multidisciplinary members spanning spine surgery, rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, psychology, social work, and allied specialties. This breadth of expertise underpins its integrated care philosophy—recognizing that optimal SCI outcomes require a continuum from acute intervention to long-term rehabilitation and community reintegration.

A defining strength of SCS is its sustained academic and scientific engagement. The Society organizes the International Spine and Spinal Injuries Conference (ISSICON) as its flagship annual scientific meeting, now in its third decade, attracting national and international faculty, multidisciplinary participation, and high-impact scientific exchange. Past conferences have featured hundreds of delegates, international faculty participation, and dedicated pre-conference workshops, reflecting the Society’s commitment to capacity building and translational knowledge dissemination.

Beyond its flagship event, SCS conducts regular workshops, webinars, symposia, and training programs, contributing to continuous professional development and strengthening the clinical and rehabilitation workforce across India. The Society also plays a pivotal role in advancing research and promoting evidence-based practices, including support for academic publications, fellowships, and collaborative studies in spinal cord injury care.

SCS holds affiliation with the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) and has actively participated in global scientific collaborations, including hosting major international meetings such as combined ISCoS and Asian Spinal Cord Network conferences. This global engagement positions SCS as an important contributor to international discourse on SCI management, particularly in addressing challenges relevant to low- and middle-income healthcare systems.

From a public health perspective, the Society addresses a significant and growing burden of spinal cord injury, with India witnessing thousands of new SCI cases annually, many of whom face limited access to comprehensive rehabilitation services. In response, SCS actively advocates for improved infrastructure, standardized care pathways, and wider accessibility to rehabilitation and assistive technologies. In addition, it coordinates the “Spinal Cord Injury Day” activities across the country and lobbied actively for a National “Injury Prevention Program”.

A distinguishing feature of SCS is its strong commitment to patient-centered care and advocacy. Through its dedicated Consumer Committee, the Society supports awareness, rehabilitation access, vocational reintegration, and rights-based inclusion for individuals living with SCI. This initiative reinforces SCS’s broader vision of enabling independence, dignity, and meaningful societal participation.

With over two decades of sustained growth, multidisciplinary integration, and international collaboration, the Spinal Cord Society of India continues to play a transformative role in shaping spinal cord injury care. Its ongoing efforts are directed toward bridging gaps in care delivery, advancing research and innovation, and aligning national practices with global standards.
In an era of rapidly evolving medical science, SCS stands as a dynamic and forward-looking organization—championing excellence in spinal cord injury care and contributing meaningfully to the global rehabilitation and spine community.

Why SCS Matters Globally?

The Spinal Cord Society (SCS) brings a critical global perspective to spinal cord injury care by addressing the unique challenges of high-volume, resource-variable healthcare systems. Its multidisciplinary, rehabilitation-driven model offers scalable, cost-effective solutions that are highly relevant to both developing and developed nations.

Through sustained international collaboration and knowledge exchange, SCS contributes meaningfully to shaping inclusive, evidence-based, and globally adaptable standards in spinal cord injury management.
